Our 6th grade students participated in a cross-curricular Water Day today, learning about water in their different classes!
ILA: After reading ‘A Long Walk to Water’, students learned about the water crisis in Southern Sudan. They discovered that children their age walk up to 15 miles a day to collect contaminated water. To connect, students walked a mile around the school carrying gallons of water, read water scarcity facts, and said a Hail Mary for those children. The water they carried was donated to the Greater Cleveland Food Bank.
Science: Students explored the water cycle, climate change, and human impact. They wrote hypotheses on climate change's impact on water quality and brainstormed solutions to combat water scarcity.
Social Studies:
Learned about SMART buoys in Lake Erie and the Cleveland Water Alliance's efforts to protect the lake.
Investigated the Great Green Wall initiative to combat climate change and promote sustainable vegetation in the Sahara.
Explored large-scale water conservation and the impact of recycling plastics in our oceans.
Math:
The students tracked their water usage for the last 5 days, used technology to compile and graph the class data in order to find the average water usage per person, compared it to water usage in other parts of the world, and brainstormed ways to conserve water moving forward.
Our students are now more aware and committed to making a difference in water conservation! Thank you to all the wonderful teachers who collaborated on this very important lesson!
